One of the biggest challenges that divorce poses to couples with children is “parent alienation”. In India, the law has always favoured mother as the strongest biological, emotional and social support for children. And, unless a mother shows her disinterest or incapability to raise her children, the court will always direct child custody with the mother. An intelligent mother would use this opportunity to give her best to the children, but at the same time encourage them to spend time with their father and extended family. As the famous adage goes – it takes a whole village to raise a child. Even if a woman is well-educated, financially independent and has a good social standing, it won’t make up for the loss that children will bear if they do not get quality time and attention from their father.
